 Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation     Updated
The Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation is dedicated to preserving the memory and legacy of the greatest humanitarian/aviation event in history, The Berlin Airlift.

Our Mission is to preserve this memory by preserving several aircraft used in the great event and creating "Flying Memorials and Classrooms" with the purpose of educating the public about this pivotal, yet forgotten, event in world history.

Founded in 1988, the Foundation has obtained and restored to flying condition, a Douglas C-54E transport aircraft, which helped support the C-54's which carried out this great mission. Named "SPIRIT OF FREEDOM", the aircraft is painted to represent the 48th Troop Carrier Squadron, one of the many groups which carried out the event. Inside, the "SPIRIT", is a genuine museum dedicated to the Berlin Airlift, filled with artifacts, displays, and information explaining this all important event in recent history.

In 1996, the Foundation has also taken on an even BIGGER challenge: The Boeing C-97. This large 4-engined aircraft is one of only 2 left flying in the world today. The Foundation purchased this aircraft in 1996, and is planning to create a flying exhibit dedicated to the Berlin Airlift and the Cold War.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

 Canada Aviation Museum     Updated
When the CanadaAviationMuseum (CAvM) first opened at Uplands airport in Ottawa, it was one of three major collections owned by the Canadian government.

At that time, CAvM’s focus was on bush flying and early aircraft manufacturers in Canada. A second collection, held by the CanadianWarMuseum, concentrated on military aircraft from World War I to the 1950’s, while the Royal Canadian Air Force collection emphasized military aircraft related to RCAF history.

Beginning in 1964, the three collections were amalgamated for public display under a new name, the “National Aeronautical Collection”, in new quarters at Ottawa’s historic RockcliffeAirport. The arrangement, which gave visitors a better perspective on the development and use of aircraft in Canada over the years, proved to be tremendously popular.

Coming under the wing of the National Museum of Science and Technology in 1967, the National Aeronautical Collection continued to acquire both military and civil aircraft important to Canadian and world aviation history. It has since grown to include more than 130 aircraft and countless artifacts such as engines, propellers, instruments, armament, flying gear and wind tunnel models. In 2000, the NationalAviationMuseum was officially renamed the CanadaAviationMuseum and remains a component Museum of the Canada Science and Technology Museum Corporation.

The CanadaAviationMuseum has avoided the tendency to concentrate exclusively on the aviation accomplishments of a single nation, or on developments within one sector of the aviation industry. Instead, the Museum’s collection policy is to illustrate the development of the flying machine in both peace and war from the pioneer period to the present time. The collection gives particular, but not exclusive, reference to Canadian achievements. Consequently, aircraft from many nations are represented in the collection—a fact that has earned it a strong international following.

The CanadaAviationMuseum is recognized as having the most extensive aviation collection in Canada and one which ranks among the best in the world. In 1988, the importance of the collection was acknowledged in the opening at Rockcliffe of the first phase of a multi-phase development program to serve as the new home of the collection.

 Evergreen Aviation Museum     Updated
The airplane and helicopter exhibits and the artifact, research library and archive collections form the core of the Museum, yet there is a sense in which they are really only secondary, supportive tools to our mission. The aircraft, stories and artifacts are up-close and personal examples of human achievements that have brought us to this current place in history. We strive to create an environment that not only teaches children, youth and adults about the great milestones in the story of aviation, but also demonstrates the importance of other human skills like mathematics, teamwork, determination, perseverance, science and technology.

Dreams of flight have captured the imaginations of children and adults alike for centuries. Captain Michael King Smith had a fascination with flight that began in childhood and continued throughout his short life. Captain Smith’s fierce dedication and passion for flying led to his dream of an aviation museum unlike any other – a living museum that celebrates aviation’s rich history, honors the patriotic service of our veterans and offers enlightening educational programs in aviation.

Raised in McMinnville, Oregon, Michael King Smith graduated from McMinnvilleHigh School 1984. An honor student, varsity athlete, and an Eagle Scout, he showed the signs of a leader at an early age. He continued his education at the University of Washington and in 1989 received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force. He graduated first in his class with from Columbus Air Force Base. He also received awards including the Commander’s Trophy, Distinguished Graduate and Flying Excellence. Smith went on to become an F-15 pilot and Lead for the 123rd Fighter Squadron of the Oregon Air National Guard. At the same time, he served as President of Evergreen Ventures, Inc., and EvergreenAirVentureMuseum. He was founder of the Evergreen-Doe Humane Society and President and Founder of Quality Aviation Services. Captain Smith died tragically in an automobile accident in 1995.

When Captain Smith returned from FighterLead-InTraining School he was full of enthusiasm for the creation of a living aviation museum. Evergreen International Aviation founder, Delford M. Smith, shared his son’s vision. Together they collected vintage warbirds and began the process of creating a world class aviation museum in Oregon – a museum that would keep the inspiring stories of early aviators alive while encouraging other visionaries to pursue their dreams. Today, the EvergreenAviationMuseum is the realization of the Smith’s vision to create a lasting tribute to the inspiring history of aviation and its vital role in the world. It is a place where people can see famous artifacts from the history of aviation and become inspired to change their lives through academic and professional career training in the fields of aviation and aerospace.

“The EvergreenAviationMuseum and the Captain Michael King Smith Educational Institute fulfils Michael’s vision of creating a place that inspires people to be the best they can be. The new institute is a gift from Evergreen to the community, celebrating 40 years of learning and growing together.”
~ Delford. M. Smith, CEO and founder, Evergreen International Aviation / Chairman, Evergreen Aviation Museum Board of Trustees

F-15 Memorial (located across from the EvergreenAviationMuseum)
On September 19, 1996, Evergreen crews and members of the Oregon Air National Guard hoisted a McDonnell Douglas F-15A Eagle onto the pedestal where it now resides. The curiosity the aircraft creates is obvious by the large number of visitors who journey up the sidewalk daily. The most commonly asked question is “What is the significance of the aircraft on the pedestal and its history?”
The F-15A, serial number 76-0014, is located at the site in memory of Captain Michael King Smith and Major Rhory Roger Draeger. Captain Smith and Major Draeger both died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in March 1995. It stands in celebration of their memory and service to our Nation in this permanent location for everyone to view.

The memorial includes the flags of the United States, Oregon, and the 123rd Fighter Squadron “Redhawks” fly alongside the F-15, as a reminder of Captain Smith and Major Draeger. It is a valuable artifact in the Museum’s aircraft collection and a landmark structure on the Oregon Coast Highway.

Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum     Updated
The Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and SpaceMuseum maintains the largest collection of historic air and spacecraft in the world. It is also a vital center for research into the history, science, and technology of aviation and space flight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics.

The Museum has two display facilities. The National Mall Building in Washington, D.C. has hundreds of artifacts on display including the original Wright 1903 Flyer, the Spirit of St. Louis, the Apollo 11 command module, and a lunar rock sample that visitors can touch. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center displays many more artifacts including the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay and Space Shuttle Enterprise.

The Museum currently conducts restoration of its collection at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Suitland, MD. For years, this facility also displayed many of the Museum’s artifacts kept in storage. Only guided tours allowed access to this portion of the collection. The new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center displays most of the aircraft and spacecraft previously stored at Garber, many never seen before in a museum setting. The Center will also eventually become the Museum’s primary artifact restoration facility.

The Museum benefits from the guidance received from the distinguished Americans on the National Air and Space Museum Board.

The Air Museum Planes of Fame     Updated
The Air Museum was the first permanent air museum west of the Rocky Mountains. It officially opened its doors to the public in January 1957, with an initial collection of six aircraft and a great deal of hope for the future. The museum’s original location was in Claremont, California. As the collection began to outgrow this first makeshift facility, the aircraft were moved to the Ontario, California airport. In 1973, The Air Museum finally took up its present residence at the Chino Airport, California. Coincidentally, this location was originally the home of the Cal-AeroFlightAcademy during WWII, where thousands of Army Air Corps cadets learned to fly the warbirds the museum is now preserving.
