Formula 1 Air Racing, Air Combat Flight Instruction, Aerobatic Flight Instruction
2003 marked Smokey Young’s Rookie year as a Formula 1 race pilot. He attended the 2003 Pylon Racing Seminar held at Reno/Stead and went on to place third in both Bronze Heat races and the Bronze final for 2003 in his modified Cassutt IIIM, "Zarrina" race #77 during the National Championship Air Races in September. He was named 2003 Formula 1 "Rookie of the Year."
Smokey comes to Formula 1 Air Racing with an extensive aviation background. In 1982 he attend USAF, Undergraduate Pilot Training graduating in June 1983. He went on to fly operational tours in the B-52G, T-37B and FB-111A. From there he transferred to the Tactical Air Command where he flew the F-111D, G, and F. He was an Instructor Pilot and Flight Examiner in the F-111. In 1991 Smokey graduated from the USAF, Fighter Weapons Instructor Course and returned to a line fighter squadron as a Flight Commander. In 1994 he transferred to Special Operations where he served as a Fighter Liaison Officer at Ft. Bragg, NC. In 1997 he left active duty to pursue an airline carrer. Smokey spent eight years flying as a pilot for the ATA airlines including 4 years as a B-727 and B-737 Captain. Smokey is Type Rated in the B-727, 737, 757/767 aircraft.
A strong interest in General Aviation, Experimental Aircraft and Air Racing have existed during Smokey’s entire aviation carreer. He earned civil Instructor ratings while flying in the USAF and helped establish an Experimental Aviation Association chapter in Clovis, NM. He has assisted in several homebuilt projects to include a Long-Eze and Hyperbipe being built by friends. He has also managed to log time in over 50 different types of aircraft, from J-3 Cubs to a PV-2 Harpoon Bomber.
Smokey left the airlines in 2005 to pursue a career in aerospace as an engineer. he currently lives in Chino Hills, California. Number 77 is hangered at the famous Chino Airport. Home to an eclectic mix of warbirds and experimental aircraft.
