At a press conference on 12 October 2006 Delta Air Lines and Flughafen Wien AG announced the resumption of Delta flights to Vienna after a seven-year break. Beginning with the summer flight plan 2007 a Boeing 767 will connect Vienna with the Delta hub in Atlanta five-times per week. The only US carrier at Vienna International Airport plans to increase flights to a daily rotation starting in 2008.
“In addition to a large number of destinations in Eastern Europe, the expansion of long-haul traffic represents a major focal point of our strategy. Delta Air Lines is an attractive partner and – with its hub in Atlanta and extensive network of connecting flights – will form an important addition to Vienna’s flight plan,” commented Herbert Kaufmann, member and speaker of the Management Board. “We are very pleased to welcome Delta Air Lines back as a customer after an absence of seven years.“
Vienna and Atlanta represent an ideal combination. Vienna is the gateway to Eastern Europe, with a wide range of connecting flights offered by the Austrian Airlines Group and numerous East European airlines. Recent additions to Vienna’s flight plan include Air Moldova and Dniprovia, and Transaero will add the Moscow – Vienna – Moscow route to its programme at the beginning of November. The Delta hub in Atlanta is the perfect gateway to the south, southwest and southeast of the USA and also to South America.
“We welcome the addition of new routes that round out Delta’s global network and make travelling easier for our passengers“, emphasised Bob Hannah, Regional Director Sales EMEA of Delta Air Lines. “This new service is the only non-stop connection between Vienna and the south-eastern region of the United States, and will also offer business travellers and vacationers a large number of additional connections between Austria and the USA, Latin America, Canada and the Caribbean.“ The link with the Atlanta hub will also create interesting opportunities for the cargo sector.
