Nature lovers will now be able to tell their woodpeckers from their treecreepers and their oaks from their horse chestnuts at a local Hampton-in-Arden beauty spot, following the award of a cash windfall from Birmingham International Airport. Thanks to the award, totalling £2,000, local residents can now find out more about the environment around them at the popular Shadowbrook Woodland & Wildflower Meadow Walk, with the recent addition of an interpretation board which gives an insight into the wildlife and fauna to be found at the 35 acre site. With three differing habitats to enjoy, old woodland, young woodland and wildflower meadows - each having their own distinct set of plants and animals to look out for - there is plenty to see and do, and with the help of the new interpretation board and map, walkers will now be able to identify the wildlife around them.
The grant is the second such boost for the area following the award of £5,000 last year used to fund tree-planting at the site, which is enjoyed by local residents all year round.
John Morris, Birmingham Airport’s Head of Corporate and Community Affairs, said, "We are delighted that the Airport has once again been able to fund a very worthwhile cause which will benefit the whole community and encourage local people to enjoy a great walk. With an award of £5,000 helping to fund tree-planting at the same location last year, this is definitely another example of the Airport making a real difference to the local community."
Birmingham Airport supports various community ventures through a number of initiatives, including the Community Trust Fund, which was set up a decade ago to help local causes. The fund has already handed grants to over 400 projects, totalling nearly £900,000, with recipients varying from dance clubs to Scout groups.
Twice a year, groups can apply for a Community Trust Fund award of up to £3,000 to help finance community or environmentally-focused projects with the Airport Company donating £50,000 annually to the initiative. Additional funds are raised by fines imposed on airlines that exceed the Airport’s noise violation levels.
Community groups interested in applying for a Community Trust Fund grant can do so by contacting the Airport’s CTF Administrator by calling 0121 767 7111 or emailing commtrust@bhx.co.uk.
