Pegasus Airlines, a privately-owned Turkish air carrier, has placed an order for six Next-Generation 737-800 aircraft with an option for six additional 737 aircraft (either 737-700, 737-800 or 737-900 ER types). Deliveries of the first six aircraft to Pegasus Airlines, an all-Boeing operator based in Istanbul, begin in 2008 with a price tag of $800 million.

Pegasus Airlines, Turkey’s largest private airlines company uses Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen as its hub for its domestic flights. Pegasus Airlines started operations 15 years ago with a Boeing 737 and has since grown its business to a fleet of 14 Boeing 737s which includes twelve 737-800s and two 737-400 aircraft. With the arrival of the 6 new 737-800 aircraft in 2008, the fleet will grow to 18 737-800s, two 737-400 models, and possibly later with 6 additional 737s (737-700, 737-800 or 737-900ER) for a total of 26 aircraft, making Pegasus Turkey’s largest private airline.

Turkey’s national carrier, Turkish Airlines, is a major operator with a fleet of 88 aircraft. Turkish Airlines operates 47 Boeing aircraft, including 17 737-400 and 30 737-800.  Boeing officials predict strong traffic growth for the Turkish aviation market, both domestic and international. Over the next 10 years, Turkish carriers will require 160-180 new airplanes. Single-aisle airplanes like the Boeing Next-Generation 737 will constitute the majority of demand.
