29/04/06: Boeing, AirTran Airways Finalize Order for 24 Next-Generation 737-700s

SEATTLE, April 28, 2006 — Boeing [NYSE: BA] announced today that AirTran Airways, the Atlanta- and Orlando-based low-cost carrier, has ordered 24 Next-Generation 737-700s. AirTran Airways converted options for 14 airplanes for delivery in 2008 and ordered 10 additional 737-700s for delivery in 2010. The estimated value of the order, at list prices, is $1.3 billion.

29/04/06: AGUSTAWESTLAND: South African Super Lynx 300 First Flight

The first of four Super Lynx 300 helicopters for South Africa took to the air for the first time on 24th April 2006 at AgustaWestland’s Yeovil factory in the UK. The successful first flight was witnessed by Mr Francois Kotze, Programme Manager, Armscor and Lt Col Rob Sproul, Project Officer, South African Air Force. Alan Johnston, Managing Director Military Programmes at AgustaWestland said “We are delighted that this important milestone has been achieved on time and we look forward to seeing the Super Lynx 300 enter service with the South African Air Force next year.”

Conrad Burns (R-MT) for introducing a legislative proposal seeking suspension of so-called “fuel fraud” tax rules that are confusing and time consuming for companies involved in the sale of aircraft fuel, and have the potential to adversely impact aviation infrastructure projects.

28/04/06: Media Advisory: FAA Tests New Software For Logan Ground Radar System; Testing May Result In Neighborhood Overflights

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced today the testing of new safety logic software installed in the existing AMASS/ASDE-3 ground radar system at Logan International Airport. The new safety logic is designed to alert FAA controllers when there is a possibility of an incident on Logan’s runways. Logan Airport is the first airport in the country to obtain this new software upgrade. Installation of the safety logic software was a recommendation of the joint FAA/Massport Team that was convened last fall to address airfield incursions. The upgraded system will remain in place until the newer and more sophisticated ASD-3X ground radar system is installed, which could take up to two years to install.

28/04/06: Girls’ Day at DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS)

Last Thursday 56 school girls saw for themselves at DFS in Langen that the air navigation services are not a male-dominated industry, rather they also offer attractive career opportunities for women. The girls were highly impressed at having the opportunity to look over the air traffic controllers’ shoulders as they worked in Europe’s largest radar control centre. According to Thomas Machate, head of training at DFS in Langen, it was “an excellent day and the girls were delighted to be here”. The 13- to 17-year-olds were also thrilled to be able to experience in the simulator how air traffic over Germany is handled. The young ladies were informed about the different traineeships at DFS. Apart from the training of air traffic controllers, DFS also offers traineeships in commercial and technical professions.

28/04/06: Predator UAV Kills Terrorists

A USAF General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. MQ-1B Predator unmanned aerial vehicle recently engaged three insurgents in the process of planting a homemade bomb along a road near Balad AB, Iraq, neutralizing the threat with an AGM-114 Hellfire missile. The Predator monitored the three terrorists for about a half hour while they used a pick ax to dig a hole in the road, placed an explosive round in the hole, and strung wires from the hole to a ditch on the side of the road. When it was clear the individuals were placing a bomb, the Predator launched the 100-pound Hellfire missile, killing all three insurgents.

28/04/06: NASA Launches Satellites for Weather, Climate, Air Quality Studies

Two NASA satellites were launched Friday from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., on missions to reveal the inner secrets of clouds and aerosols, tiny particles suspended in the air. CloudSat and Calipso - Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations - thundered skyward at 3:02 a.m. PDT atop a Boeing Delta II rocket. The two satellites will eventually circle approximately 705 kilometers (438 miles) above Earth in a sun-synchronous polar orbit, which means they will always cross the equator at the same local time. Their technologies will enable scientists to study how clouds and aerosols form, evolve and interact.

28/04/06: Pieces of NASA’s Next Mars Mission are Coming Together

NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander, the next mission to the surface of Mars, is beginning a new phase in preparation for a launch in August 2007. As part of this “assembly, test and launch operations” phase, Phoenix team members are beginning to add complex subsystems such as the flight computer, power systems and science instruments to the main structure of the spacecraft. The work combines efforts of Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver; the University of Arizona, Tucson; and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

Virgin Atlantic Airways today announced that from the 5th May 2006 it will be offering personal styling consultations for its Upper Class passengers in its new Clubhouse at Heathrow airport. The service is aimed at helping both men and women with busy lifestyles to find and perfect their individual look. The clinic will run at the Clubhouse until the 29 May, Friday to Monday from 09:30 to 16:30. Paris, April 28, 2006 - Alcatel Alenia Space announced today the successful launch of the Calipso climatology satellite, based on its Proteus platform and integrated in its French sites. The satellite was launched by a Delta 2 rocket on April 28, 2006 at 3:02 a.m. PDT from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, along with the Cloudsat satellite.

28/04/06: skyguide: Graduation of 18 new air traffic controllers

Geneva, 28 April 2006. At the end of April, 18 trainees successfully completed their three and a half year course of instruction and the new air traffic controllers were handed their licences at an award ceremony held on Castle Hünigen in Konolfingen. Interest in a career in air traffic control remains as high ever, with hundreds of applications being received every year. The Skyguide Training Center (STC) is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructures; it is now located at Zurich airport but will move this autumn to Wangen bei Dübendorf.

28/04/06: Royal Air Force: Harriers to stay in Afghanistan

The Joint Force Harrier detachment from RAF Cottesmore currently based in Kandahar, will continue to provide vital close air support and reconnaissance to Coalition and NATO forces operating in Southern Afghanistan, the Defence Secretary John Reid confirmed earlier today. The decision to extend the Harrier detachment until 31 March 2007 was announced to Parliament by means of a Written Ministerial Statement by Adam Ingram, the Minister of State for the Armed Forces. 28/04/06: Rolls-Royce opens new manufacturing facility at Barnoldswick

Rolls-Royce today formally opened its new £7 million facility in Barnoldswick that has been designed to manufacture a range of specialised aero-engine components. This modern, purpose-built factory, which will make stators, vanes, seals, solid fan blades, outlet guide vanes, combustion casings and liners, was one of four developments given the go-ahead in April 2004. This investment was a key element within a broader programme to modernise factories, drive down costs and ensure the company’s domestic facilities operate at world-best levels of competitiveness.

28/04/06: Frasca International to Supply Eurocopter EC135 Helicopter Flight Training Device to the Finnish Aviation Academy

The Finnish Aviation Academy, Pori, Finland has contracted to purchase a Eurocopter EC135 helicopter Flight Training Device (FTD) from Frasca International. The FTD will be dual qualified as JAA FTD 3 and JAA FNPT 3 MCC. These are the highest levels of JAA qualification available for each class of device and will allow considerable flight time credit. The device will feature Frasca’s latest technology including a TruVision visual system with an extensive, highly detailed database covering much of Finland, simulated EFIS and VEMD displays, flight test validation data, blade element modeling, automatic certification testing, exact cockpit replication, electric control loading, multi-channel sound simulation and NVG compatibility.

28/04/06: CAE donates more than C$420,000 to Centraide and wins Solidaires award

Montreal, April 28, 2006 – (NYSE: CGT; TSX: CAE) – CAE recently presented a donation of C$423,000 to Centraide of Greater Montreal, concluding the 2005 CAE-Centraide Campaign. Of the total amount, C$323,000 was donated by employees and C$100,000 was contributed by the company. Approximately 48% of CAE employees participated in the 2005 CAE-Centraide Campaign, successfully surpassing the fundraising goal of C$380,000 by C$43,000.
